My First Volunteer Experience

My first volunteering service was in October 2010, when I volunteered for my local library's book sale day. At the time, I didn't know what a volunteer was. I heard the word before but it didn't have any meaning to me. I remember, my favorite librarian was telling me about the event a few weeks prior to it, and she asked me whether I want to help out with the sale. She knew I was artistic and work well with kids, so she told me to paint younger kids face. I didn't know what I was getting myself into, but it sounded fun, so I decided to do it. I wanted to be seen as one of those kids who have the ability to draw a cute picture on other people's face, just like how I looked up to previous volunteers before. On the day of the book sale, I woke up early and went to the library as soon as my mom got ready. I went there and I was super excited. It took me a while to get used to drawing on someone's face, but I eventually did it, and kids loved it. Throughout the whole day, I drew on more than 50 kids' face, and each left with a smile on their face. I felt great. I was continuously asked to volunteer for doing the face painting. I didn't know why I liked doing it so much. Now that I look back to this event, I finally understood why I enjoyed doing it over and over. I love using my own labor, my own effort, to create a smile on someone's face. I realized, even the smallest things I do, can create a difference - life changing or not - to others' lives.

One of the most important community service activity that I have participated in was the Atlanta Aga Khan Foundation Walk and Run held in Centennial Olympic Park every mid-September. It's also one of my favorite volunteering events I participate in. I've been volunteering in the activity for the...
