Project Budget
The budget of this project is approximately $62,500 to cover all of the costs necessary to get to Ghana and to obtain supplies to bring to the school.
The problem you want to help solve? Approximately 7,000 children in Ghana are beaten every day and forced to work in horrendous conditions. Even though slavery and child labor are illegal in Ghana, desperation and poverty has pushed parents to sell their children as young as the age of four into slavery for as little as the equivalent to twenty to fifty US dollars. The trafficker then sells or leases the child for about the equivalent to three-hundred US dollars, making a profit of at least $220 per child. The children are easily identified by their stunted physical appearance due to malnutrition from only being fed once a day. Parents do not understand the humanitarian issues that are involved in selling their children. The ultimate problem to solve is to end child trafficking and slavery in Ghana.
Why is it important? This project is important because it gives inner-city kids the opportunity to explore the disparities in Ghana compared to in the United States. As for the enslaved children in Ghana, if they are not rescued they will grow up uneducated and as adults might traffic children themselves, continuing the appalling practice. The children spend hours in the sweltering sun doing horrific jobs that they are unpaid for and there is no escape. The enslaved children of Ghana should be afforded the same rights as everyone else in It is not fair for them to be a part of modern day slavery when it is not legal in their country.
Who will benefit? The children that are sold into slavery by their parents will receive the most benefit from this project. A After being rescued, children are given the opportunity to be enrolled in school and given the chance to get an education. They will be rescued from slavery and given the chance at a normal life. The volunteers will also benefit because they will learn more about the modern day slave trafficking that is happening in Ghana and trying to find a way to relieve Ghana of this prevailing issue.
What will you be doing? The volunteers will be visiting a school that was opened by a former child slave to give children that were rescued a better future. They will be bringing supplies that could help in the efforts. Since we are a health science school, most of the supplies will be those that can help in the prevention of diseases and other things of that nature. They will also visit parents that have sold their children and try to educate them on the effects that child trafficking has on their children and their welfare.
The Urgency ranking looks for projects which:
- Will help students who've never been funded before;
- Have been partially funded by several donors; and
- Don't have much time left.
The ranking is automated and updated throughout each day.
