Project Additional Details
The teens picked to embark on this mission this summer went through an application and interviewing process. I was blessed to be chosen again this year. Last year I applied and was interviewed for this same trip and I was chosen and my money was fundraised, but the day of the trip my late passport had not arrived and my group had to leave without me. The $1300 that I raised could not be refunded. I pray with all of my heart that I will be able to go on this mission this summer. I love speaking Spanish and I've never been out of the country. I cannot wait! P.S. I do have my passport now so I don't have to worry about it this time :)
  • The problem you want to help solve?
We want to research and learn about the negative influences the Ticos face living in Costa Rica, whether it be pressure to do drugs, have sex, commit crimes, etc. After researching our group will put together presentations on these influences and give alternatives and solutions to them. Our group is also doing a fundraiser. We are beginning now to brainstorm and find out what it is that we can donate tot eh Ticos and the YMCA over there when we travel this summer.
  • Why is it important?
This mission is important because more more our world today is becoming international. To succeed you almost have to be able to speak two languages. Through this mission we will learn about the culture of teens like ourselves and families of another culture and we will begin to get accustomed to them while they become introduced to and accustomed to ours. This sharing of points or views, language and culture will make us less likely to judge or discriminate against others of another race or country simply because they are different or speak another language. The Ticos will also learn not to judge or stereotype us by interacting directly and personally with us.
  • Who will benefit?
Everyone involved in this mission trip will benefit. Us American teens traveling out of the country, me for my first time, will be completely inspired and amazed by what we see and learn. Embarking on this trip will give us a sense of kinship as we travel, and the Tico teens and everyone at the Y in Costa Rica will benefit, whether we play basketball or soccer with children, or donate coats or school supplies. Also everyone who donates to our cause to allow a teens to embark on the mission will benefit knowing that they had a part in making a difference somewhere in the world directly.
  • What will you be doing?
Our group will be volunteering for the YMCA in Costa Rica and performing service projects based on what the YMCA needs and what the Tico teens need.
